The evolution of Darwinian sexualities

چکیده

Abstract Charles Darwin's Descent of Man was suffused with questions courtship, mating and sex. Following in his footsteps, biologists throughout the twentieth century interrogated sexual behaviour humans animals. This paper charts fate evolutionary theories sexuality to argue that – despite legal social gains past when used selection as a tool for theorizing evolution homosexual (which happened only rarely), effect their continuously reinscribe normative heterosexuality. If, at end nineteenth century, certain sex theorists viewed homosexuality marker intermediate sex, by late new generation idealized gay men hyper-masculine biological males whose behaviours were uncompromised necessity accommodating women's preferences. In both cases, assumptions about gender interwoven those sexuality. By twenty-first animal exemplars again mobilized alongside data gathered human practices defence rights, but this time creating opportunity naturalization without recourse determinism.

The Emergence of Darwinian Evolution

Horizontal gene transfer (HGT) is seen to have been a pervasive phenomenon in the early history of life, necessitating a new evolutionary model for the deep past. We find that in this early time, HGT is the dominant evolutionary mechanism, in fact completely obscuring vertical descent at the time of the universal ancestor—a time of communal evolution out of which Darwinian evolution was to emerge.

Darwinian model of evolution

The remarkable feature of life is its ability to self-reproduce. Self-replicating systems fit in naturally with Darwin's evolution scheme. However, I argue here that what Darwin thought was natural selection driven by the struggle for existence is indeed a manifestation of the zeroth law of thermodynamics. When this law is applied to competing self-replicating entities biological evolution appe...

Darwinian evolution in the light of genomics

Comparative genomics and systems biology offer unprecedented opportunities for testing central tenets of evolutionary biology formulated by Darwin in the Origin of Species in 1859 and expanded in the Modern Synthesis 100 years later. Evolutionary-genomic studies show that natural selection is only one of the forces that shape genome evolution and is not quantitatively dominant, whereas non-adap...

Darwinian Evolution on a Chip

Computer control of Darwinian evolution has been demonstrated by propagating a population of RNA enzymes in a microfluidic device. The RNA population was challenged to catalyze the ligation of an oligonucleotide substrate under conditions of progressively lower substrate concentrations. A microchip-based serial dilution circuit automated an exponential growth phase followed by a 10-fold dilutio...
